Nonpoint pollutants from agriculturally used areas influence the surface as well as the groundwater quality.Reducing the pollution can be achieved by applying the appropriate quantity offertili.zer at the right time.Applying models for the simulation of water and nutrient dynamics can help analyzing the complex behavior of the system. In this paper, model concepts for the simulation of water and nutrient dynamics in catchments with rice cultivation will be discussed.Because ofthe complexity ofthe land use pattern a distributed model concept has been chosen instead of a lumped model concept.Furthermore, submodels for plant growth as well as for nitrogen transformation are presented which are necessary be.cause these processes control the dynamic of the whole system.
